    Black Mist , Twister To Make
Rare Appearance April 21-22
MARIETTA (Lancaster Co.)
Black Mist and Twister, two
great granddaughters of Misty of
Chincoteague, will be making a
rare appearance in Lancaster
County at the upcoming ninth
annual Horse Farm Tour set for
April 21 and 22.
The Chincoteague Pony Drill
Team will have a few select
Chincoteague ponies and drill
team members appearing at the
Stables at Village Square, 333
Coffee Goss Road, Marietta.
This is a rare opportunity for
people to meet the people and
ponies up close that are part of
this select drill team. It is the
only drill team known in the
world made up entirely of Chin
coteague ponies.
The Chincoteague Pony Drill
Team, including Black Mist and
nine other Chincoteague ponies
have appeared at the Kentucky
Horse Park as well as Equitana
USA, an international horse
event, held annually in Louis
ville, Kentucky. Last year the

Co.) Child care is a growing
field in Franklin County and
Penn State Cooperative Exten
sion is offering a class for indi
viduals interested in child care as
a business. The workshop will be
held on April 23 at the Extension
Office, 191 Franklin Farm Lane,
Chambersburg.
This introductory workshop
will focus on setting up home
care for children, understanding
the nature of the job, toys and
activities for children, healthy
snacks and home safety issues.

Champion Drill Team. The tro
phy they won will be on display
at the Horse Farm Tour.
As part of the day’s activities
at the Stables at Village Square,
a few members will perform
some of the riding drills that are
part of the Chincoteague Pony
Drill team act. There goal is to
show those interested just how
versatile and athletic the Chinco
teague pony can be. These leg
endary ponies all date back to
the wild ponies that live off the
eastern shore of Virginia, made
famous in the book Misty of
Chincoteague by Marguerite
Henry.
In addition, the Chincoteague
Pony Drill team will have an in
formation table and selling items
to help support the drill team, in
cluding T-shirts. This will proba
bly be the only appearance this
year of the Chincoteagues in
Pennsylvania at any farm or
farm tour.
Doors open to the public at 10
a.m. on Saturday and noon on
Sunday. On Saturday, the Chin
coteagues will perform at 11:30
a.m., followed by colt breaking,

pleasure demonstration held at 3
p.m. The barn closes at 4 p.m.

The Stable at Village Square is
a new 24 stall training and
boarding facility with box stalls,
wash bays, tack rooms, heated
lounge, rubber footing in an in
door arena, turnouts, a large
sand outdoor ring, round pen
and much more. They offer a full
service training and boarding fa
cility, including breaking fitting,
show prep and training and of
fering beginner through ad
vanced lessons in basic horse
manship, hunt seat, western and
driving.
The Stable at Village Square is
located at 333 Coffee Goss Road,
Marietta. From York or Lancas
ter take Rt. 30 to the Rt. 441 exit.
Go north on Rt. 441 towards
Marietta about four miles. Turn
right onto Rt. 743. Continue to
the first road to the right (Coffee
Goss Road) and turn right. Turn
right at the drive with the sign
Stables at Village Square.

Pulp Wood Company’s annual
cost sharing program. This pro
gram, which has been responsible
for the planting of over 19 mil
lion seedlings in Pennsylvania
since its beginning in 1951,
shares the cost of the seedlings.
Landowners in Adams, Berks,
Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin,
Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata,
Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin,
Northumberland, Perry, Schuyl
kill, Snyder and York counties
are eligible to participate.
All trees become the property
of the landowner who decides
when they will be harvested.

Heather Graf Crowned
Maryland Hereford Queen
HAMPSTEAD, Md. Heath
er Graf, an 18-year-old North
Carroll High School graduate
was crowned the 2000 Maryland
Hereford Queen in June. During
the summer of 2000, Heather
traveled through Maryland at
tending various cattle shows and
sales, meeting many of Mary
land’s Hereford breeders and
making many new friends.
Heather currently attends
Carroll Community College with
plans of transferring to the Uni
versity of Maryland in the fall of
2001. She plains on attaining a
degree in agriculture and then a
teaching certificate. Her long
term goal is to use her education
to teach young suburban/urban
children about agriculture.

In January, Heather had the
distinct honor of attending the
National Western Livestock
Show and Sale in Denver, Colo
rado. Her grandfather, Stewart
Graf, and her mother, Jan Graf,
both of Hampstead, traveled to
Denver with her. She was one of
nine young woman competing
for the National Polled Hereford
Queen.
Following a busy week of
competition and shows, Heather
was voted Miss Congeniality by
her peers.
