HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Four state agencies are
inviting all Pennsylvanians to
participate in an exciting oppor
tunity to help shape the future of
the Commonwealth’s valuable
water resources.

Environmental Protection (DEP)
Acting Secretary David E. Hess
today asked residents to partici
pate in a forum called “Water Is
Our Future Draining Away?,” to
discuss Pennsylvania’s current
and future water resource needs.

Forty-six farmers in the
Northeast were recently
awarded $191,068 in grants
under the Northeast Sustain
able Agriculture Research and
Education (SARE) Farmer/
Grower program.
Awards ranged from $551
to explore whether pumpkins
plants are a viaWc forage for
sheep to $13,839 for the devel
opment of a year-tound mar
ket for value-added farm
products through freezing and
vacuum packaging.
The average grant was
$3,980. Projects are chosen for

Input On Pennsylvania’s Valuable Water Resources

these forums will help set policies
to protect water as a resource
and an economic asset,” Hess
said. “We encourage citizens to
come out and provide their input
on water issues in their commu
nities.”

departments of Community and
Economic Development, Conser
vation and Natural Resources

sign, and potential impact on
the sustainability of farms
across the region.
Northeast SARE supports
projects in sustainable agricul
ture for farmers, researchers,
and educators, and is a pro
gram of the USDA. The re
gion includes Connecticut,
Delaware, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Hamp
shire, New Jersey, New York,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont, West Virginia, and
Washington, D.C.

15 public forums across the
Commonwealth. The Susquehan
na River Basin Commission also
is assisting.
The forums will outline basic
water resource challenges and
opportunities, both locally and
statewide. They also will help to
raise awareness while gathering
citizens’ thoughts on water re
source issues in Pennsylvania.

Offered On Pork’s Website
DES MOINES, lowa A self
study breeding and gestation
management course will be avail
able via the Internet on pork’s
website from May 14 to July 6.
The eight-week course is part of
the Distance Learning Project of
the National Pork Board.
“Through this checkoff
funded course, participants can
learn or review basic breeding
and gestation management tech
niques anywhere they have in
ternet access, such as their home
or workplace,” explained Jenny
Felt, special programs manager.
“Current lifestyles and de
mands on your time sometimes
make it difficult to find the time
to take courses needed to help

upcoming events, videos and
publications, news clips from
around the state on water and a
message board where people can
discuss water issues online.
A new publication, “Water is
Life,” which raises provocative
questions about water in a collec
tion of essays by a variety of au
thors, will be available at the fo
rums and online.
“After the forums, DEP will
publish a summary of public
input on our website,” Hess said.
“This information will help DEP
to better understand the issues
you advance in your job, to work
toward a degree, or to have fiin.”
If you have access to a com
puter with the appropriate hard
ware requirements and computer
applications, then online courses
can be completed at your own
pace. By being offered on the In
ternet, the breeding and gesta
tion management course is a con
venient continuing education
option for ag professionals. The
curriculum is for people working
in the breeding and gestation
areas of any pork production op
eration.
The course has six lessons,
each with a self-graded quiz.
Each lesson can be taken at one’s
