    Poultry Industry Honors Outstanding Individuals; Growers
GEORGETOWN, Del. Del
marva Poultry Industry, Inc.
(DPI), the trade association for
the peninsula’s broiler chicken
industry, conducted its annual
booster banquet recently in Salis
bury, Md.
Awards were presented to 19
outstanding poultry growers and
three individuals who have made
significant contributions over the
years to the chicken industry.
In addition, DPI announced
the results of its annual fund
drive, its membership campaign
that raises funds to allow DPI to
continue its work to strengthen
the chicken industry. Fund drive

the audience of more than 1,500

DPl’s most prestigious award,
the J. Frank Gordy Sr. Delmarva
Distinguished Citizen Award,
was presented to Selbyville, Del.
businessman Warren H. Mum
ford. Mumford and his family
owned business, Mumford Sheet
Metal Works, has been a supplier
to the chicken industry since
1935. He and his family built the
original and replacement giant
fry pans that have been used at
the annual Delmarva Chicken
Festival since 1950.
Mumford is a longtime mem
ber of the DPI board of directors

and for many years has been an
active solicitor during the DPI
Fund Drive. A longtime member
of the Selbyville Lions Club.
Mumford is known as a willing
supporter of the Selbyville com
munity.
The DPI Medal of
Achievement for an elected offi
cial went to Delaware State Sen
ator Thurman G. Adams of Brid
geville. Adams has been a strong
advocate for the poultry and ag
ricultural industries for decades.
As a member of the Delaware
Senate since 1972, he has always
been willing to work on behalf of
the chicken industry. Adams has
been active in many community
and professional organizations
and is among Delaware’s most

sity of Delaware poultry disease
researcher Dr. Jack Gelb. During
his more than 20 years with the
university, Gelb has conducted
research on several economically
important diseases that affect
Delmarva’s chicken industry. He
is one of the world’s leading au
thorities on avian bronchitis.
Gelb has served on DPI commit
tees during his tenure at the Uni
versity of Delaware and has
made countless presentations to
DPI meetings.
Since 1966, DPI has recog
nized Delmarva’s outstanding
poultry growers at the booster
