We all like to try something
new...and kids are no exception.
Here are some ideas for snack
thne that will entice bored appe
tites. Start with a different kind
of bread than the one you usually
serve whole wheat, rye, pum
pernickel, or wheat berry. Thinly
sliced sandwich bread works well
when flattened with rolling pin.
To add interest, cut the sand
wiches into triangles, quarters, or
finger length strips; or use deco
rative cookie cutters for special
celebrations. Coat one side of the
bread with light spread, such as
reduced-fat margarine or low-fat
cream cheese. This will prevent
the sandwich from becoming
soggy.
the goodies.
Lancaster and Lebanon county
4-H members will also be invited
and should plan to participate in
numerous games and enjoy some
delicious refreshments. The
YWCA of Carlisle has offered
the use of its facilities for both of
these events.
Community service project
ideas were also discussed and
many opportunities to serve were
identified.

Use a variety of fillings
some sweet, some savory. Peanut
butter, thinly sliced cucumbers,
banana slices, ham and cheese or
mustard try some new ideas
but include children’s favorites.
If you want your small sand
wiches to look fancy, it’s best to
cut the crusts off just before serv
ing. Stack two or three sand
wiches and cut the crusts off all
at once. (Use the leftover crusts
to make bread pudding or stuf
fing.)
If you want to make sand
wiches ahead of time, you can
keep them moist by covering
them with wax paper and laying
a damp kitchen towel over the
waxed paper. Be sure to refriger
ate sandwiches. Bread is a good
source of complex carbohydrates
and other nutrients. By using
low-fat and reduced-fat fillings,
these little treats become nutri
tional, as well as tasty snacks.
