4-H Members In Champion Spotlight At Lancaster County Banquet

LANCASTER (Lancaster
Co.) 4-H livestock and meats
judging programs are more pop
ular than ever, with 29 4-H’ers
signing up last year, according
to Chet Hughes, Lancaster
County livestock agent.
Popular interest brought the
most number of 4- H’ers to the

program that “I’ve seen since
I’ve been an agent,” Hughes told
about 300 4-H members, family,
and friends late last week at the
annual Lancaster County 4-H
Livestock Banquet at the Farm
and Home Center.
“Our livestock program con
tinues to grow and flourish,”
Hughes said. “Enrollment in
both the swine and Woolies
clubs annually bumps 100 mem
bers. The new dairy beef club
will nearly double in 2001, with
more than 60 members.”
Hughes said the 4-H goat pro
gram is “gaining in popularity.
The most traditional of county
livestock programs, the 4- H
Red Rose Beef Club added eight
new members last year, and had
an outstanding showing of
champion steers at the Pennsyl
vania Farm Show.”
Many 4-H members were hon
ored for outstanding contribu
tions at the banquet.
Also, Farm Show scholarship
winners from the county were
recognized, including Gerald
Boyd and Gerald’s sister Sarah,
and Jessica Schmidt.
In the Woolies Club, the
annual $250 scholarship award
began as a contribution from the
Gerald Engle Family to the 4-H
program to give back some of
what their family gained in posi
tive experiences and strong
values. The Lancaster Sheep
and Wool Growers Association
also contributes to the scholar
ship fund.
Recipient this year was Mi
chael Musser. Musser has been
active in the Woolies 4-H Club
for eight years, exhibiting more
than 20 market lambs at 30
events.
Woolies Club President
Award was presented to Radell
Peters, 17, son of Ray and Becky
Peters, Elizabethtown.
The Novice Shepherd Award
was presented to Roanna
Martin, 12, daughter of Galen
and Nancy Martin, Mount Joy.
The 2000 Shepherd of the
Year Award went to Jenniffer
