market outlook.
Robert Mikesell, senior exten
sion associate from Penn State,
will provide a pork quality as
surance overview for producers
who need initial certification or
recertification.
Robert Meinen, also a senior
extension associate from Penn
State, will be providing the live
stock environmental certifica
tion program overview. This is a
voluntary program sponsored by
Penn State and the State Con
servation Commission in coop
eration with PennAg Industries.
A legislative activity fund
auction is scheduled at the
Expo. A live auction begins at
11:30 a.m. by Col. Harry Bach
man. Silent bidding closes 1 p.m.
The junior public speaking
contest begins at 10 a.m. The
Keystone Pork Bowl begins at
9:30 a.m. and concludes at 2
p.m.
Pork Expo programs are
available at most county exten
sion offices.

year. Production in 2000 is
about 18.9 billion pounds and is
expected to increase to 19.4 bil
lion pounds, slightly higher than
the previous record production
in 1999.
The price of hogs in 2000
averaged 43 cents to 45 cents per
pound. The 2001 price will aver
age two to three cents less than
last, with most of the drop
coming in the second half of the
year.
Because feed is inexpensive,
hog production will continue to
be profitable for most producers
through 2001.
The 10-year economic boom,
what some believe is the longest
in U.S. history, has helped the
nation’s meat industry. This
year each person will consume
about 221 pounds of meat, up 11
pounds from a decade earlier.
According to Lou Moore,
Penn State ag economics, the
size of the com and soybean
crops has been revised down
ward since the initial crop report
in August, but the harvest is still
a bin-buster. The corn crop, ini
tially estimated at 10.4 billion
bushels, is estimated at 10.2 bil
