Whether it’s your first job or one of many, you’ll likely face rejection several times. You’ll also spend lots of time marketing yourself to potential employers. A typical job search can take weeks or even months. To get a job these days, you must convince employers that you have the necessary skills and experience. This is generally done in writing and/or in person. Below are some tips: Resumes Keep it short. Two pages maximum. One page is better. Use an outline format with short phases. Neatness counts! A resume should be typed and print ed on white or cream bond paper. Proofread carefully for typos, spelling, and grammati cal errors. List your present job first and work backwards. Stress accomplishments and skills. Include your name, home and business address, and phone numbers. Do not include personal data such as marital status. Include key words from a job announcement. Some employers are scanning resumes with computers to screen qualified candidates. Send a cover letter with a resume. Describe your quali fications and interest in an employer. Close with a re quest for an interview. Avoid using the word “I” in a cover letter. It gives the impression that you are concerned only about yourself. Interviews: Do your homework. Research potential employers and learn about their products. Use the interviewer’s last names (such as “Mr. Jones”) from time to time. Watch the tone of your voice. Avoid ending sentences on a higher tone so they sound like a question. Be positive. When asked about previous employers, say something nice. Send a thank-you note a few days later.
