SMALL GRAINS - MISCELLANEOUS
Class 009 A-Soybeans, Any Vanety: 1
came from Sean Casey of Lewis
berry, who, for the past four
years, has exhibited his award
winning carvings at the Farm
Show.
Casey has been a professional
decorative woodcarver for 10
years, but has practiced the art
since childhood. Each year at
the Farm Show, Casey has
shown his carvings to be judged
in the world woodcarving cham
pionship.
This past April, Casey retired
from the world championship
and he was asked to develop an
other way to incorporate wood
carving in the Farm Show. With
the assistance of woodcarvers
Mike and Jane Reed of Harris
burg, and Secretary Sam Hayes,
the first youth woodcarving con
test was established. This con
test hopes to draw boys and girls
to woodcarving, which, accord
ing to Casey, is an art typically
performed by adults and seniors.
Sign-ups for the competition
will continue throughout the
week of the Farm Show, but sub
missions can also be made by
mail. To sign up, send the name,
address, school currently at
tended, grade, and category of
interest of the student to Sean
Casey, 38 Alfred Drive, Lewis
berry, PA 17339. Through Casey
students can get advise on
woodcarving, and valuable in
formation about free classes stu
dents can attend in their area.
There is a $5 parking fee per
vehicle in the Farm Show park
ing lot, located along Cameron
Street, just off Interstate 81.
Overflow parking is available at
Harrisburg Area Community
College, with shuttle bus service
to the Main Exhibition Building
provided for 75 cents.
