Monday, Monday
According to Scottish custom, the first Monday of the
New Year was called Handsel Monday. It was a time
to bestow gifts on children and servants. The handsel
custom continues today in the form of presenting house
warming gifts to bring good luck to new beginnings.
The second Monday of 2001, January 8, is Plough
Monday, the day when the men of olden England were
supposed to get back to their work. In some villages,
however, the day was spent dragging a plough through
town, collecting money for the “plough-light,” which
was kept burning in the local church; homes that refused
to give alms had the ground in front of the door
ploughed up. Music and danc- A
mg followed by a feast of
beef and ale was traditional.
