222 Keystone Recipients To ‘Discover The Power’
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
While national FFA moves toward its
75th anniversary, state FFA is busy pre
paring for its annual Mid-Winter Con
vention, scheduled at the Farm Show
Complex Monday, Jan. 8.
Two hundred and twenty-two Penn
sylvania FFA members will receive the
cherished Keystone FFA Degree at the
Pennsylvania Mid-Winter Convention,
set for the Large Arena of the Farm
Show Complex at 4:30 p.m.
Hundreds of family, friends, and
agri-industry supporters will be on
hand at the festivities to congratulate
the winners of the state’s highest
degree.
The 2001 national convention theme
symbolizes the organization’s mission,
to “discover the power” they all share
as FFA members.
The state FFA honors less than 10
percent of its members with the Key
stone Degree. There are certain require
ments each FFA member must meet to
receive it. Only seniors and graduates
are eligible. They must have shown
leadership ability, must have earned
from their own efforts in farming or
from supervised agricultural experience
(SAE) programs, and deposited in a
bank or otherwise productively invested
at least $l,OOO or worked at least 300
hours in excess of scheduled class time.
Out of the 222 recipients of this year’s
Keystone Degree, four state stars out of
the regional stars will be chosen in their
respective area. Selection of state stars
is based upon their SAE program. Pro
grams must show comprehensive plan
ning, continuation, growth, and
increase in scope with records to prove
such accomplishments.
The four stars include production ag
riculture; ag sales, service, and mechan
ics; horticulture; and specialized
agriculture, including forestry, natural
resources, and nontraditional agricul
ture.
The gala event is free and open to the
public.
Lancaster Farming showcases the
work of chapters throughout the year.
Members put in long hours and work
hard to ensure the success of their indi
vidual organizations. By sharing their
special talents, they reap the benefits
that FFA membership has to offer. We
congratulate members on the fine work
they do throughout the year and wish
them success in their chosen careers.
