Over the years, various First Ladies have believed new china was needed for official functions, and have selected pat terns pleasing to them. They fol lowed the design fashions and colors of the time. One of the earliest sets was a gift to Martha Washington, in 1795 from Andreas Everaredue Van Braam Houckgeest, the rep resentative of the Dutch East India Company, of Chinese Ex- 8:30 A.M. lUIP. ■ 2 LG. Mary Todd Lincoln found only a fraction of tableware available to host large State dinners. She had been left with the remains of china from the administration of President Pierce known as the “Red Edge” set. She soon re placed them with plates showing the American eagle, pictured in the 1853 London, Crystal Palace Exhibition. She added her own touch by replacing the blue bor der with a bright, purple-red, then in fashion...and her person al favorite color. If Sevres porcelain was the china of French kings, then Ha viland and company, Limoges, France, can be called the china of American Presidents. Documents have shown that the Lincoln plates were made by Haviland, as were the many sets for succeeding Presi dents. Clues: Over the years, Presidential china has been reproduced. “The Martha Washington’’ or “States” china was made and sold to the public to tie-in with the 1876 U.S. Centennial and celebrate the signing of the Decla ration of Independence. Haviland and Company was commissioned to re produce it. In 1969, Haviland and Company began repro ducing a series of plates in the original Presiden tial designs, beginning with the Martha Wash ington china. The series included the Lincoln and Grant plates. Presidents Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur and Rutherford B. Hayes. The most popular was the Lincoln plates. The edition of the first two issues was 2,500 each addition. They are sometimes stamped “Adminis' ra tion Abra ham Lin coln,” in red. Others have the mark of J.W. Boteler & Bros, and “Fabrique” par Haviland & Co./Pour J.W. Boteler &Br o / Washington. Another popular White House china reproduction was the Pres ident Grant series. The original design known as the “Flower Set” depicted almost every native American flower documented at the time along with the gold crest of the United States, and made in 1870. The reproduction has a center design of a rose with 21 different color changes.
