Area Leadership
Training Conference
Recently, the Lebanon-Schuylkill FFA joined to con
duct a leadership training conference at Elco High
School.
The Lebanon County Officers started off the evening
with ice breaker games that helped members get to know
one another better.
The club was honored to have the Pennsylvania State
FFA Officers attend the conference. State officers also
helped with the icebreakers and provided greetings from
the Pennsylvania FFA Association.
After the icebreakers, Javier Moreno, a student from
Puerto Rico, spoke about agriculture in Puerto Rico. He
inspired members to take part in the FFA, to promote

Every now and then I find something that I have not
seen for years. Maybe it is a piece of jewelry that one of
my daughters gave me. Or, maybe it is a book that was a
gift some 20 years ago. It does jog my memory to find
them.
Since I am good at forgetting who gave some gifts, I try
to mark them with a name and date. Too many do not
get used and are put in the back of a drawer. The useful
gifts are the ones that wear out from usage. As folks get
older, their lives become cluttered with an accumulation
of items.
Therefore, we are told to give things such as stationery,
stamps, and food that will be used. Many knickknacks
clutter our houses and must be put away when the grand
children come to visit.
I have a hand blown paperweight from France, a small
crystal ball from New Orleans, and a tiny antique music
box that intrigues the children and they cannot leave
them alone. The music box has a key to wind it and that
especially interests them.
Another thing that is the worse for wear or rather from
being upset are my dried arrangements. I grow straw
flowers and dry other flowers and make small arrange
ments. But these bouquets break easily when toppled over
by little hands.
Yesterday, a Christmas cactus arrived in the mail for
me. You see, as a special birthday gift, my children gave
me a floral gift. Each month for a year, another plant ar
rives. So far I have received a gardenia, a lily, a jasmine,
a mum, an amaryllis, and a mini pink rose bush. These
are things that I will not forget who gave them to me.

from the Cornell University College of Human Ecology:

FFA to the best of their abilities, and to be an active
member. The Elco cafeteria staff provided the evening
meal.
The Greenhand quiz contest took place after the meal.
The quiz contest is a spelling bee-style contest where
first-year FFA members are asked questions about the
FFA. Cedar Crest members in the contest were Kyle Sey
fert, Samantha Shepler, and Joel Heinaman. Prizes were
given out throughout the evening.
Club members eventually split into four groups and
participated in sessions with FFA county officers and the
state FFA officers. Sessions included information on pub
lic speaking, official dress, teamwork, and positive atti
tudes. Members went home with a new understanding of
the FFA.
