The Pan-American Washer, patented in 1883, employed this central
agitator, which operated back and forth. The bottom-mounted agita
tors of today’s washers employ similar back and forth motion. The
wringer was made by the American Wringer Company and patented in
1888. The concept of the agitator is one of a very few inventions that
have lasted over 100 years. Today washing machines use all agitator
only operated from the bottom by electric motor. -Pasto Agricultural
