Many Techniques Made Furniture Elegant
From the earliest days when
furniture was first made to sat
isfy a variety of utilitarian
needs, its makers added touches
for beauty. The ancient civiliza
tions used paint and gilt, even
inlays of precious stones and
carvings. The furniture of an
cient Rome was made from
exotic woods and often trimmed
with bronze. Sometimes it was
nielloed with gold or silver. It
was usually the tables that were
adorned with ivory, tortoiseshell
and metals.

Oriental furniture was usually
made of rosewood that was
carved in various ways. Lacquer
and polychrome paint were used
to enrich Chinese furniture. The
Japanese combined lacquer with
mother-of-pearl inlays and often
painted with gold or silver.
Some of the most elegant furni
ture was made in India and the
Islamic countries from the 14th
century and later.
In Europe, by the 13th cen
tury, furniture as we know it,
came into being. It was orna-

mented with heavy carved
panels and Gothic motifs.
By the 16th century, Italy was
making small “fancy” pieces.
However, it was the armorers
not the woodworkers who cre
ated them using inlays of marble
and semi-precious stone.
It was in the late 17th century,
however, that cabinet-making
came into it’s own in Italy in Ba
roque designs. The wealthy and
royalty commissioned cabinet
makers to create elaborate
pieces. Veneering was used,
often of ivory, silver and tor
toiseshell.
During the same period, the
Dutch or Low Country became
expert at parquetry patterns and
floral marquetry. A popular
veneer was ebony.
In Spain and Portugal at that
time craftsmen made
“platersque” inlays that were
delicate abstract geometric or
