West Snyder Wins SUN Area FFA Forestry CDE BEAVER SPRINGS (Snyder Co.) In October, the West Snyder FFA Chapter hosted the SUN Area FFA land judging and forestry career development events. Placing first and earning a blue ribbon in the forestry CDE was Derek Fetterolf from West Snyder FFA Chapter. Other West Snyder FFA members who participated in cluded James Wright and Bran don Herman, who were awarded red ribbons for their efforts. Pheadra Wray and Laura Knepp won white ribbons. In the forestry CDE, students had to take a written test on their general knowledge of for estry, identify various trees and forestry equipment, and make recommendations to improve timber stands. In the land judging CDE, members had to determine the physical characteristics of the soil, such as depth and texture and then use that information to recommend an approved land use. This event was conducted at four sites. Heather Hollenbach earned a red ribbon on the area level and placed third in Snyder County. Meetings coordinator Greg Laßarge, OSU extension agent for Fulton County, said other speakers were selected based on the problems farmers faced in their local areas. A few of the wide array of topics include soil nutrient management, strip til lage and conservation tillage, new pest problems and their management.
