cessfully tested a new Touch
down® non-selective herbicide
in over-the-top applications on
Roundup Ready® (RR “) soy
beans, corn, and cotton. Zeneca
anticipates registration of new
Touchdown for'the 2001 grow
ing season.
The current Touchdown 5
formulation has been widely
used over RR soybeans and for
burndown weed control, accord
ing to Bill Beutke, brand mana
ger at Zeneca. But the company
never registered Touchdown 5
over RR corn or cotton because
it sometimes caused unaccept
able levels of phytotoxicity on
those RR crops.
“The new Touchdown fea
tures a new, innovative glypho
sate molecule optimized by a
unique, com-based, balanced
adjuvant system called IQ Tech
nology™,” Beutke said. “In
trials conducted by Zeneca and
universities across the U.S., the
new, patented Touchdown for
mulation has delivered out
standing non-selective weed
control and excellent crop safety
to RR crops including RR corn
and RR cotton. In hundreds of
trials we saw essentially no
effect on the crops at all, even

In addition to RR corn and
cotton, Beutke said new Touch
down will be registered as a
burndown application in more
than 100 new, additional crops,
including cotton, small grains,
grasses, numerous horticultural
crops, and several legumes.
“We expect to have all the ap
plications that were on the
Touchdown 5 label, plus many
more,” he said.
The new IQ Technology im
proves spray retention, herbi
cide uptake, and translocation
of the active ingredient through
out the weed, Beutke said. At
the same time, it minimizes po
tential phytotoxicity to RR
crops because the glyphosate
salt and adjuvants are very
gentle to epidermal cells on leaf
surfaces.
Touchdown controls more
than 170 weeds, including
tough-to-control species such as
velvetleaf, cocklebur,
waterhemp, giant ragweed,
smartweed, ivyleaf morning
glory, prickly sida, quackgrass,
johnsongrass, bermudagrass,
broadleaf signalgrass, and fox
tails. A typical use rate for the
new Touchdown in many situa
tions will be one quart per acre.
