JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent BAIR (York Co.) Outstand ing York County 4-H members were recognized and honored at the annual Achievement Night, held recently at the 4-H Center. Named outstanding club of the year was the Central Dairy Club, represented at the presentations by several members and leaders of the group. Two of the club’s members. Angie Beshore and Cory Thompson, also won indi vidual honors in dairy in the sen ior and junior division, respec tively. York County’s outstanding senior 4-H members were Tammy Wirt, Dillsburg; and Greg Daugherty, Dover; with Am) Backet, Dillsburg; and Mary Zeigler, named the out standing juniors. Top rookie awards went to Kari Kinard, Fel ton; and Kyle Miller. Airville. Individual club officer honors were awarded to Beth Baer, Glenville, as the county’s out standing treasurer; Kelly Jo Ban ker!, Red Lion, outstanding sec retary; Katrina Gore, Airville, outstanding news reporter; and Amy Backel, Dillsburg, out standing historian. National 4-H Congress Dele gates for 2000, the highest award achievable for club members, are Tammy Wirt, Dillsburg, and Ri jelle Kraft, Manchester. The two honorees will attend the annual nationwide gathering of 4-H’ers, to be held during November in Atlanta, Georgia. Special recognition was given to a trio of 4-H’ers who donated extensive hours of volunteer ef forts in the program. Kelly Jo and Brandy Bankert, Manches ter, served 128 hours each to 4-H volunteerism, and Rijeiie Kraft, Manchester, for 120 hours given to 4-H volunteer leadership. A combined 1,800 hours of volunteer time by 31 teen leaders, for an average of 58.06 hours each, was recognized with special honors. Several long-time adult volun teer leaders of 4-H programs were honored during the annual awards program, with Sharon Ebaugh, Delta, topping the “lon gevity” list with 40 years service recognized. Other multiple-dec ade leaders include Darlene Wherley, Glenville, 35 years; Lois Rankin, Spring Grove, Di anna Shive, Seven Valleys, and Donald Walter, Airville, 25 years each; Carmin Daryman, Anne and Jack Wagner, York, 20-year honorees. Cited for 15-year stints of leadership were Cindy Johnson, Edward Keeney, and Margaret Runkle, York, Cindy Lou Wil son, New Freedom, and Kathy Wise, Spring Grove. Ten-year leaders are Cindy Axe, Dallas town, Robert Livingston, Seven Valleys, Patti Myers, Linda Par rish and Rosemary Sprenkle, York; and Richard Wilt Jr., Dillsburg. Outstanding project recogni tion was extended to several dozen York 4-H members taking a variety of projects. Their accomplishment won them special certificates of commendation from the Pennsyl vania State House of Representa tives, awarded by Rep. Bruce Smith (92nd Dist.). A senior at Northern High School, Tammy plans to pursue a degree in special education at Bloomsburg University. She is an active member of the school’s Future Teachers of America Club, Life Skills classes, SADD and assists with Special Olym pics programs. Tammy is a varsi ty basketball player and has been named an All Ajnerican Scholar in both math and science. Rijelle Kraft, Manchester, daughter of George and Mary Jo Kraft, is a member of the swine, rabbit, poultry, and senior ex change clubs. She is president of 4-H County Council and a 4-H Ambassador. Varsity club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and ALPHA Peer Helpers are among Rijelle’s numerous school activities. She is also editor of the school’s literary magazine and was recently named a National Merit Scholarship commendee.
