West Snyder FFA Wins SUN Area Event
The SUN Area FFA dairy and livestock
judging and tractor driving career devel
opment events were conducted Tuesday,
Sept. 19 at the Beaver Community Fair.
The West Snyder FFA livestock judging
team won the top honors by judging mar
ket steers, hogs, lambs, and breeding
sheep. Oral reasons were given on the
West Snyder FFA Tractor Driving Career Development Event partici

In the livestock judging event, Derek
Fetterolf, Brandon Herman, Hannah Etzl
er, and Lance Herman earned the top four
spots by placing first through fourth place
respectively. These members earned blue
ribbons and the first place team honors for
West Snyder FFA.
Heather Hollenbach and Doug
Hollenbach earned red ribbons in
the event. Trophies for the top team
and individual were sponsored by
Zerby Livestock Farm.
In the dairy judging event, con
testants judged three classes of Hol
steins and a class of Jersey cows.
FFA members also judged a class of
pedigrees and took a written dairy
management test. On an individual
basis, Amanda Shaffer placed
eighth and earned a blue ribbon.
Daphne Wagner and Melissa
McWilliams earned red ribbons and
Phaedra Wray, Travis Catherman,
and Spencer Etzler earned white
ribbons.
In the tractor driving event, stu
dents backed a four-wheeled wagon
into an area that was four-inches
wider than the wagon. They also
took a written test and demonstrat
ed tractor maintenance proficiency.
Mike Sassaman and Andrew
Kreamer placed seventh and eighth
respectively and earned red ribbons.

Profit Workshop
MERCER (Mercer Co.)
Thinking of starting a home-based
food business?
Penn State Cooperative Exten
sion is having a workshop on Dec.
6 which is designed to help you de
cide if selling a food product from a
home-based or small business will
be a reasonable profitable thing to
do. The focus of the workshop will
be on developing a business plan,
including information on identify
ing sources of financing, planning
your risk management, finding out
the legal and tax requirements for
starting a business, effective mar
keting strategies, and much more.
An economic development agent
and a panel of local people will
offer marketing strategies. A busi
ness instructor will discuss pricing
products. A representative of the
Pennsylvania Department of Agri
culture will talk about the licensing,
registration, and the inspection
process. A food safety educator will
offer important details to assist you
in the safe preparation of products.
How to maximize shelf life and re
duce the risk of foodbome illness
will be included.
The workshop will be held at the
Mercer County Extension office,
VA miles north of Mercer on Route
19, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Dec. 6,
2000. A notebook of information
and lunch will be provided for $25.

Holiday
Tours
WESTMINSTER, Md. The
Carroll County Farm Museum in
vites visitors to attend the holiday
tour. This year’s theme is “Christ
mas Past and Present.”
Christmas music will accom
pany visitors as they tour the Farm
house. Food will be available for
purchase in the summer kitchen.
Also featured are Santa visits, poin
settia sales, artisan demonstrations,
and wagon rides; the General Store
will be open for holiday purchases.
Dates are Friday, Dec. 1; Satur
day, Dec. 2; Sunday, Dec. 3; and
Friday, Dec. 8; Saturday, Dec. 9;
and Sunday, Dec. 10. Hours on Fri
days are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturdays,
10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sundays, 10
a.m.-5 p.m. The fee of $1 per per
son; Children age 6 and under ac
companied by a paying guest will
receive free entry.
