what chemicals to use for treating wood
damaged/infested by Eastern Subterranean

ANSWER - A reader wrote that she and
many other seamstresses often have difficulty
discerning the right and wrong sides of fabric.
She wanted to know if the holes along the edge
of the fabric are punched from the right or
wrong side or if that varies and is not a clear
indicator. An anonymous reader wrote that she
was told the fabric on the bolt is folded with
the right side inside for protection. If you buy
fabric by the yard, it is usually easy to see
which way the fabric was folded on the bolt.

jar filler that has two strainers and funnel that
can be attached and exchanged on the bottom

wanted information about brooding chickens
using a coal-fired brooder. He wants to know
what time of the year to do this, how often the
fire needs to be fed, etc. He’s also looking for a
pamphlet describing the use of a Eureka Colo

toward helping the small poultry grower. For

ANSWER Jonas Seller, New Holland,
wanted information on raising night crawlers.
Thanks to Deborah Rowland who e-malled that
Boiler should ask for bus bedding at a local
sporting goods store. This can be made from
pulverized unprinted new stock, available at
most newspaper companies. Run through
blender for small quantities. Mix with aged ma
nure. Add good quality worms. It works best to
raise earthworms in a 4x4x12-inch box in a
basement or cool, moist place. Keep slightly
damp. Feed nightly, stale bread spread lightly
with peanut butter and lay spread side down on
beds, about six pieces per bed.

ANSWER Douglas Runkle wanted to know
how to get rust off the inside and outside of an
iron kettle and keep it off. Thanks to Harry Mul

rust can be removed with vinegar, a mild acid.
Let the item soak in vinegar a while before
rinsing with water.
ANSWER For the reader who wanted to
know how to remove the odor of mothballs
from an old trunk, a reader wrote that the odor
can be removed by placing a bowl of fresh, dry
coffee grounds in the trunk. Close the lid for
2-3 days. She writes this method also works
well to remove unwanted odors in cars.
