Manheim Dairy Show Grows To Become Largest Show In Lancaster
MICHELLE RANCK
Lancaster Farming Staff
MANHEIM (Uncaster Co.)
From a handful of exhibited
animals two years ago to almost
100 head this year, the Manheim
Dairy Show, which almost
closed, has grown to become the
largest dairy show in Lancaster
County this year.
“Two years ago, we had 20
cows and barely five exhibitors.
The state fair fund matches
premium money for five exhibi
tors and we only had four and
almost lost it, but one exhibitor
came at the last minute,” said
Ruby Bollinger, member of the
Manheim Dairy Show Commit
tee.
Show numbers also increased
when the show was opened up to
Lebanon County last year,
which resulted in 56 head exhib
ited.
In addition to the broader
pool of exhibitors and extra do
nated prizes from corporate
sponsors, this year a milk auc
tion helped to draw younger
participants.
A symbolic gallon of milk
from the supreme and reserve
champion in the youth division
is auctioned off, with 90 percent
of the proceeds going to the ex
hibitor, said committee member
Mike Kerdeman, Manheim.
Two percent of the auction
money goes to the farm show
and eight percent goes to the
dairy committee to pay for the
painted crocks which accom
pany the milk.
Other community fairs also
have a milk auction, said Kerde
man, who was enthusiastic
about Manheim’s auction. “We
have really good supporters here
in town,” he said.
This year grand champion
Dustin Horning received $750
for his gallon of milk from Man
heim Auto Auction and reserve
grand champion Crystal Bru
baker sold her gallon for $425 to
Jacob Ruhl Insurance, Man
heim.
“It’s been snowballing for
us,” said Michelle Wetzel, also a
committee member, of the

show’s growing numbers.
Wetzel points to word of mouth
as the main source of advertise
ment. “The kids went back to
Lebanon and told others about
this show.”
Two years ago the show had
two exhibitors, last year the
number rose to three, and this
year 22 junior exhibitors
brought their animals to Man
heim.
The committee has also intro
duced corporate-sponsored
classes that donated prizes
toward class winners. Last year,
10 businesses sponsored the
class, a number which rose to 29
classes this year. Area businesses
donated blankets, chairs, and
CD cases for the youth exhibi
tors.
“We also had special things,”
said Wetzel. “We (the dairy
committee) had an ice cream
social and birthday party for an
exhibitor and this morning we
had donated milk and chocolate
milk and doughnuts for the ex
hibitors,”
“If you want to sum it all up,
it’s all everyone working to
gether and helping each other
out and lending a hand,” said
Wetzel, who cited examples of
exhibitors in the same classes as
sisting each other.
“There’s a lot of support from
the community, a lot of people
willing to donate time, money,
and products,” she said.
The outdoor show took ad
vantage of the 75-degree fall day
to showcase the animals. In the
youth show, judge Elvin Hess
looked for a true-type model of
each breed. “I try to pick the one
the closest fit to that model,”
said Hess, who selected Dustin
Horning’s Holstein out of the
tough competition of the 3-year
old class.
“Turn Pike View Starbuck

cows put together just the way
you like to see them,” said Hess.
In the morning’s colored
breeds show, James Findley
owned the grand champion
Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, and
Milking Shorthorn. Andrew
Dice had the grand champion
Jersey. In the Holstein show,
Lindsey Horning had the junior
champion, followed by Dustin
Horning with reserve junior
champion.
Since each breed represented
a difference in size, scale, ap
pearance, and breed characteris
tics, Hess again looked for the
closest fit to the best model of
the breed for overall grand
champion. To Hess, the Hoi
steins at the show followed true
type model the closest, as he
picked Lowell and Deb Brubak
er’s animals for overall and re
serve grand champion placings.
The Brubakers, who operate
Hilltop Heritage Farm, brought
IS head to exhibit at the Man
heim’s dairy show. The family
milks ISO head and crops 210
acres of corn and alfalfa. Their
daughter, youth reserve cham
pion winner Crystal, is joined by
Heather, 19; Blake, 14; and Can
dice, 9. “The kids are the eighth
generation,” said father Lowell
Brubaker.
“We enjoy doing fairs, they
always have incentives for youth
as far as premiums and gifts,”
said Brubaker. He said that he
appreciates the efforts at
motivating youth to stay in
volved in showing animals. The
Brubaker family also shows at
Elizabethtown fair and the Lan
caster 4-H show, besides making
an occasional appearance at the
Farm Show.
Elvin Hess, retired dairy pro
ducer from Strasburg, judged
the dairy show. Hess served for
30 years as a 4-H leader and has
judged shows for 15 years, judg
ing in every district show in the
state of Pennsylvania. Following

honors. Crystal Brubaker, Hilltop Heritage Farm, took
home reserve junior champion placing. In place of tro
phies, grand and reserve champion winners took home a

bakers, Manheim, milk 150 cows at their Hilltop Heritage
Farm.
Representing Manheim Fair Dairy Committee is Mike
Kerdeman, Michelle and Gene Wetzel, and Ruby Bollinger.
Andrew Dice, James Findley, and Lowell Brubaker lined
