New Heights for
Women’s Suffrage
Annie Smith Peck, bom on October 19 a century and a
half ago (1850), first made a name for herself when
she climbed the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps in
1895. In 1908, she was the first mountain climber, man
or woman, to ascend the 21,812-foot Mount
Huascaran in Peru. At age 61,
she again ventured to Peru to
climb the 21,250-foot Mount
Coropuna, where she placed jjPy~
a “Votes for Women” ban- }
ner at the peak. That year
also saw the publication of
her book, Search for the Apex
of the World: High Mountain Climbing in Peru and
Bolivia, Including the Conquest of Mount Huascaran.
All serious daring starts from within.
