Glickman Expands USDA Assistance
WASHINGTON, D.C.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan
Glickman recently announced
an expansion of USDA’s efforts
to help farmers meet their tre
mendous grain storage needs
during this period of continued
high production.
Glickman said the Depart
ment’s Farm Storage Facility
Loan program, which offers low
interest loans to farmers build
ing on-farm storage facilities,
will be expanded to include
structures designed to store
silage. In addition, the required
down payment for loans will be
reduced from 25 percent to 15
percent.
“On-farm storage gives farm
ers marketing flexibility,” said
Glickman. “USDA is broaden
ing this program to help provide
farmers the resources they need
to segregate crops and decide
when to sell them.”
Glickman said enrollment in
the four-month old program is
growing substantially. As of Oc
tober 3, 2000, USDA has re
ceived 2,347 applications from
farmers in 38 states. Exactly
1,828 loans totaling $54 million
in 30 states have been approved,
including 438 in lowa, 563 in
Minnesota, 172 in South
Dakota, and 123 in Illinois.
USDA’s Farm Service Agency
estimates that these facilities
will increase on-farm storage ca
pacity by 36 million bushels.
