New Jersey Holds Dairy Princess Coronation Tonight FLEMINGTON, N.J. Four contestants will vie for the New Jersey Dairy Princess title to night at the Hunterdon County Extension Center, Flemington, N.J. In addition to the coronation, the 37th annual event will award Dairy Farm of Distinction recipi ents and winners of the Jersey Fresh Recipe Contest. Vying for the crown are the following county dairy princess es: • Jaime Marie Carlise, 17, Burlington County Dairy Prin cess. Jaime, daughter of Kenneth and Charlene Carlisle, has lived on a dairy farm all her life and is knowledgeable about the dairy industry and day-to-day farm work. Jaimie said, “The dairy indus try is vital not only for my fami ly’s survival but also for our na tion’s survival. • Susan Shirley, 18, Hunter don County Dairy Princess. Suzie graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School. She lives on her grandparents’ 70-acre farm in Delaware Town ship with mom, stepdad, and sis ter. As the leaves start to turn colors and the air turns cool, a small country church starts to prepare for their annual Apple Butter Boil. About 40 miles up the Sus quehanna River from Harris burg, and just a few miles back in the hills from the tiny river side town of Liverpool, sits a red brick church known as St. John’s (Bamer’s) Lutheran Church. On Oct. 14, the Church will hold their 49th annual Apple Butter Boil. In the weeks prior to this event, much preparation is needed. There is planning and ordering and advertising. Eileen’s sister was a county and state alternate princess. Eileen is active in 4-H for 12 years and is a co-leader of Alla muchy Aggies 4-H Dairy Club. In May 2000, Eileen will grad uate with an associates degree in dairy science from the State Uni versity of New York. While in are prepared , snitzing (paring and coring of apples for the apple butter) by many in the community, and much other work detail. As many sleep through the midnight hours, the men will be putting on the freshly pressed cider to boil it down over the open fires. As dawn breaks through the night sky, the first bucket of snitz (sliced apples) is added to the boiled-down cider. By the time the first kettle is ready, the church grove is buz zing with activity. The women gather to prepare the meals and set up the craft table. By 9:30 a.m., all is ready for the people who make the annual pilgrimage to this 200-year-old church for a day of fellowship, fim, and histo ry- The event includes apple but ter boiling, a craft table, a con cession stand, and a Dutch din ner of Bott-Boi (pot pie) with all the trimmings. The concession stand sells homemade chicken corn soup, homemade ham and bean soup, bar-be-cue sandwiches, hot dogs, homemade pies and ice cream, and the famous hot apple butter sundaes. The highlight of the day is the Dutch dinner, which in cludes chicken or beef pot pie, corn, peas, red beets, pickles, coleslaw, freshly made apple but ter, schmier-kase, and homestyle bread. If you want to make the pil grimage to the little red brick church that’s perched atop a hill in Perry County, the directions are simple. Take Routes 11 and 15 to Liverpool, Pa. Turn left onto Route 17. About one mile from Liverpool, turn right onto Route 235. Follow the apple but ter signs to the Church on the hill. Come and enjoy how our ancestors boiled apple butter.
