Howcrest Holstein Takes Top Place At Lampeter
Lampeter’s dairy champs; Tim Graver, Pequea, holds the Jersey champion for James
Findley; Shawn Bachman, Millersville, holds the Milking Shorthorn champion for Find
ley; James Findley, Kirkwood, holds the Ayrshire champ; Lori Hess, Pequea, had the
champion Brown Swiss; and Lindsey Howard, Willow Street, won overall champion with
her Holstein.

WEST LAMPETER (Lancas
ter Co.) About 30 head of Hol
steins and an equal number of
colored breeds competed in the
West Lampeter Community Fair
Dairy Show.
“There was good quality
through all the breeds,” said
judge Matt Wanner.
“What I’m selecting for in the
supreme champion is the animal
that to me best fits the ideal of
that breed,” said Wanner.
According to Wanner, the
Ayrshire breed is known to be
strong and robust with correct
feet and legs and a well-attached
udder. The Brown Swiss is also
known for its sound feet and
legs.
Holsteins, said Wanner, are
traditionally the largest breed,
with great size, scale, depth,
power, and blooming capacity.
Jerseys are extremely efficient,
with high butterfat and protein
components in the milk they pro
duce.
The Milking Shorthorn, said
Wanner, is a dual purpose breed
which leads to the animals’
strength, substance, and weight
while still being a “very dairy
cow.”
Lindsey Howard’s Holstein
caught the eye of Wanner for the
supreme champion placing.
“She has tremendous frame,
balance, style, a high seam down
the udder, and correct feet and
legs which enable her to walk
around the ring so gracefully,”
said Wanner.
Howard, 15, of Howcrest Hol
steins, hails from a 40-head dairy
farm in Willow Street. She is in
the 10th grade at Lampeter
Strasburg School District.
Besides the dairy ring, Howard
tried her hand at raising beef this
year for the first time, which she
also showed at the Lampeter fair
and earned a second place.
Out of four of her own ani
mals, Howard brought ‘Char
lyse” to the fair, as the cow ex
hibited the largest frame and
most dairy character, according
to Howard, who has been show
ing as a 4-H’er for six years.
Matt Wanner of Pride-N-Joy
Farm, Narvon. judged the event.
A Penn State graduate, Wanner
has experience on the collegiate
judging team and also judged
many shows during his graduate
years as he studied genetics at
Penn State.
He judges 1-3 shows a year
and works full-time at the
400-cow family operation.
The number of Ayrshires in
creased by one during the after
noon Holstein show. Owner
James Findley showed the expec
tant mother in the dry cow class
earlier in the afternoon before
the heifer made an arrival.
“She was due today, but she
wasn’t bagging up and I was
planning to take her home to-

night,” said Findley. “I showed
in the Holstein dry cow class,
pulled the calf, and went into the
ring with a 4-year-old,” said
Findley.
