Short On Numbers But Long On Quality At Denver Fair MICHELLE RANCK Farming Staff Although numbers may not be the hallmark of Denver’s sheep show, top-notch animals showed up to compete in the market and breeding classes. Judged by Dr. Robert Herr of Narvon, owner of Nix Besser farm, the Denver sheep show was marked by quality in both market and breeding sheep divi sions. “We had a very strong market show tonight,” said Dr. Herr. “Some of the best of the state are here,” said Herr of the breed ing sheep show. “You don’t have with Jen Zimmerman’s Horned Dorset taking home grand champion and Radell Peters’ Dorset with reserve. Both are to be dressed fashiona bly in their best wool outfit (at least 80 percent wool). Not just another pretty face can steal the show. The herdsperson must not only look great, but the sheep must also show their modeling talents. The contestants and the sheep must be able to work together in the Radell Peters, 17, Eliza bethtown, comes to the Denver fair because of tradition. Peters won reserve champion ewe with his Dorset. “I’ve been here for nine years,” said Peters. “It’s a nice show, a fun show, there’s no pressure.” “It’s a laugh-, have-fun, show your-sheep fair,” agreed Zim merman. The Keystone Interna tional Livestock Exposition (KILE) has chosen Saturday, Oct. 7 as Family Day at the Farm Show Complex. Lebanon Valley Farmers/Ful ton Bank is sponsoring the “Agri-Kid Olympics” at noon. The Olympics is a fun time for kids as they compete in such farm-related events as sack races, wheelbarrow races, laugh ing contest, horseshoe pitch, and hog-calling contest. Boyd, 19, Ephrata, is a sopho more elementary education major at Millersville University. This is her 11th show ring sea son. Besides winning the market lamb show, Boyd took home champion pair of market lamb honors. Andrew Gerhart took home reserve champion. Boyd also won reserve champion showman. Many of the Denver fair’s sheep show participants will be showing their animals at the up coming Ephrata, New Holland and Manheim fairs.
