Boyd Sweeps Sale,

Sarah Boyd continued her
winning streak by clinching su
preme championship titles for
sale and non-sell market
lambs, meat goats, and market
hogs at Ephrata Fair Wednes
day.
Out of 110 sheep, show
judge John Connelly selected
Boyd’s champions for their
muscle, framework, and over
all balance.
Of Boyd’s champions in
both the selling and nonselling
market lamb competitions,
Connelly said, “These are the
kind I like to raise and the
kind my son likes to show.”
Boyd, who swept the same ti
tles last year at Ephrata, said
that she has no secrets she’s will
ing to share.
This year’s champion market
lambs are twin brothers bom
from last year’s champion ewe.
The champion non-selling lamb
was purchased from B&B in
Ohio.
“It’s ironic,” Boyd said. “All
year, my homebreds and the
B&B lamb keep splitting the
championships. Both sets have
each won two shows this year.”
Boyd said she walks the lambs
about one to one-and-a-half
miles daily around the family’s
Ephrata farm.
The reserve champion Han

Suffolk cross shown by Ryan Do
nough, 16, Manheim. Named
Autumn, the same lamb was also
selected reserve champion at the
Denver Fair.
Also in a repeat of last year’s
competition, Boyd’s best friend
Jen Zimmerman took the su
preme championship in breeding
sheep. Zimmerman, who with
her brother Jimmy raises about
65 head on their Denver farm,
showed a Southdown that took
supreme ewe and supreme over
all breeding sheep. Her brother
Jimmy, 16, showed the supreme
champion ram, a Cheviot named
Clyde. The reserve champion
ram was owned by Derrick Boll
inger, Manheim.
In the bid for the supreme
overall breeds, the rams needed
to bow to Zimmerman’s South
down with the reserve champion
ewe, a Suffolk lamb shown by
Andrew Gerhart, named the su
preme reserve champion breed
ing sheep.
The Southdown and the Suf
folk are two really outstanding
examples of breeding sheep,

Connelly said in pointing out the
lambs’ front extensions which
blended well with feet and legs,
styles, and types.

Gerhart, son of Cathy and
Glen, raises about 25-30 head on
the family’s Reinholds’ farm.
