issue. The only objective we
have is, we want people who are
quality-minded, who want to
feed high quality cattle, and do a
high quality job whether
that’s 50 head or 40,000,” he
continued. “A bunch of quality
minded feedlots, feeding 500 or
less is better than one commodi
ty-minded feedyard feeding tens
of thousands.”
Sherwood Supports
Pa. Agriculture
CAMP HILL (Cumberland
Co.) U.S. Congressman Don
Sherwood of Tunkhannock sup
ported Pennsylvania’s agricul
ture industry 100 percent during
the 106th Congress, according to
an announcement made by Guy
Donaldson, president of Penn
sylvania Farm Bureau.
In honor of his commitment
to Pennsylvania agriculture, the
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau will
recognize Congressman Sher
wood for his steadfast support of
legislative issues important to
Farm Bureau members at the
Susquehanna County Farm Bu
reau’s annual meeting Friday,
Oct. 6.
“Rep. Sherwood continuously
voted in favor of agriculture
concerning key programs before
Congress,’’ Donaldson said. “He

To be licensed, a feeder must
commit 25 percent of his feedlot
capacity to Angus-influenced
black-hided cattle. That per
centage must then be sold to a
CAB licensed processing plant.
If the cattle meet the USDA
certifled quality and yield grade
specifications, they then receive
the plant’s CAB premium.
There are basic quality assur
ance guidelines to follow, and
has voted in favor of regulatory
relief for farmers and has con
sistently garnered support for
funding programs vital to pro
duction agriculture. As a result
of the 1999 drought, Rep. Sher
wood was a leading advocate of
the need for additional funds for
Pennsylvania’s drought stricken
farmers. During the 106th Con
gress, he has supported the ex
pansion of agricultural export
markets, permanent normal
trade with China and labor
issues. Congressman Sherwood
steadfastly supported tax cut
issues, such as the reduction of
the capital gains tax and the
elimination of estate taxes.
“The 10th congressional dis
trict represents a large rural

the feedlot operator should be
consistently working toward
management strategies that en
hance carcass merit.
“While the research tells us
that certain management strate
gies have a positive or negative
effect on carcass quality, we un
derstand that you will have to
make those decisions for your
self by balancing profitability
with carcass value,’’ Stovall em
phasized. “Weil provide you
with the resources, exposure to
sources of superior cattle,
unique services and suggestions.
But we’re not telling you what to
do.”
The cost for tags, enrollment
and group data here is SO cents
per head. Moyer Packing is CAB
licensed and provides produc
ers, at no extra charge, the gen
eral carcass data information
that would typically cost $2 per
head. For the option of more de
tailed carcass data, the cost is $5
per head, which could be passed
back to the cow/calf producer in
retained ownership or other
marketing and feeding arrange
ments.
“The answer is in the infor
mation,” said Stovall. “If that
information leads to the right
genetics, the payback can be as
high as $2OO between the top
percentage of the breed and the
bottom percentage.”
