A sire analyst with Alta Genetics, based in Canada, Schirm was raised on a Jersey farm near Columbus, Ohio, and is now stationed in the Columbus area. A nationally- and interna tionally-recognized judge of all breeds, Schirm has judged at many U.S. and worldwide shows. Samuel E. Hayes, Jr., Pennsylvania secretary of agri culture, is one of six recipients of a 2000 Outstanding Alumnus Award from Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. The award highlights distin guished graduates of the college, and creates opportunities for in teraction between alumni, stu dents and faculty. Appointed secretary of agri culture in May 1997 by Governor Tom Ridge, Hayes is a leader in support of Pennsylvania agricul ture across the state and interna tionally. He also chairs several statewide boards, including the Animal Health Commission, Farm Show Commission, Hard woods Development Council, Farmland Preservation Board, Fair Advisory Board, and Con servation Commission. Extension Professional Recognized NAZARETH (Northampton Co.) Greg Solt of Northamp ton County Extension was one of 84 persons recognized by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents with their highest award, the Distin guished Service Award, at the 85th Annual Meeting and Pro fessional Improvement Confer ence in Jackson, Miss, in August. Sixty-three years ago, the first distinguished service awards Ayrshire Show, conducted in the large arena at the 37th All-Amer ican Dairy Show. The Ayrshire show increased by 80 head of cattle exhibited from the previ ous year. In the open junior show cham pion place went to J-M-How Farm and John and Marla How man of Massilon, Ohio. Tai-Line Farm’s summer yearling heifer, owned by Emily and Britni Thornburg, Winchester, Ind., took home both reserve champi on placing. The Thornburgs won and best junior bred and owned awards. From 1970 to 1992, Hayes served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he held the leadership positions of Majority Leader and Whip. Hayes authored a wide range of legislation on issues such as farmland preservation, highways and bridges, basic and higher ed ucation, appropriations for coun ty fairs and livestock expositions, and tax cuts for rural electric consumers. Hayes is a 1988 Penn State Alumni Fellow and received the Pennsylvania 4-H Alumni Award and National 4-H Alumni Award. He was awarded an Hon orary Keystone Farmer Degree and an Honorary American Farmer Degree from the FFA. He also served as president of the state FFA Foundation. He has been honored with the Lawmak er of the Year Award from the were presented to 22 members by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents at its annual meeting in Chicago. Since then, 6,086 members have been honored. Hayes has received the Humanitarian Award from the Chapel of Four Chaplains, the Leadership Award of the Penn sylvania State System of Higher Education and the Barn Raiser Award from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Hayes served five years on ac tive duty with the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star for his service in the Vietnam War. Hayes received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Penn State in 1964, and his master’s of education from Penn State in 1965.
