‘An Awful Lot Of Good Hogs’ At York Fair

YORK (York Co.) “There
are an awful lot of good hogs
here,” observed York Fair swine
judge Ken Fetterolf, Snyder
County, as he prepared to wrap
up three days of open and junior
division competition with his
pick of the supreme champion
market pig.
“And this is the best hog I’ve
seen in all the shows I’ve judged
this year,” Fetterolf added, of
fering the coveted banner and a
hearty handshake to a widely
grinning junior exhibitor, Kurt
Long.
Long, a 4-H’er from Airville,
was doing a rerun of his earlier
market hog championship in the
junior division with an ex
tremely long and lean, light
heavyweight, crossbred red pig.
The junior division open
market championship also
earned Long the John
Strawbridge Memorial Trophy,
presented by the son of the late,
long-time hog breeder and ex
hibitor, J.C. Strawbridge.
In the runoffs for the overall
breeding class supreme cham
pion hogs, boar honors went to
the Rodger Bankert family,
Hanover, with their Duroc breed
winner. Supreme gilt was also
the Duroc division winner, ex
hibited by the Bennecoff family,
Kutztown.
Open class market hog breed
championships were shared
among several veteran and
junior York Fair exhibitors.
Youth exhibitor Allen Corn
bower, New Freedom, won both
champion and reserve honors in
the Berkshire breed. Chester
White champion was exhibited
by Michael and Jean Weber,
Shrewsbury, while Scott La
zarus, Germansville, had the re
serve. Placing reserve behind
Kurt Long’s champion cross
bred was youth exhibitor Lind
say Jones, East Berlin.
Winning open class Duroc
market hog was exhibited by
Rodger Bankert, with youth ex
hibitor Travis Flory claiming the
reserve pot. Hampshire market
hog honors were shared by
youth exhibitors Cody Ault,
champion, and Tyler
Flory, reserve. Both
champion and reserve
open class Yorkshire
market hogs were
shown by the Wilson
Farm of New Free-
dom, with youth ex-
hibitor Russell Wilson
claiming the top title.

Greg and Beth Innerst exhib
ited the champion Hampshire,
placing over junior exhibitor
Chad Menges, Hanover, with
the reserve winner. Senior and
reserve senior champion sow
were from the string shown by
Donna and J.C. Strawbridge,
White Hall, Maryland. Both
boar honors also were claimed
by the Strawbridges.
In the Poland breed show, all
honors went to Cheryl Ben
necoff, Kutztown. Grant La
zarus 111, Germansville, did a
similar clean sweep of the Lan
drace classes.
Senior and grand champion,
as well as the reserve, in the
Spotted pig competition was
won by Leslie Lazarus, Ger
mansville. Lazarus also took
