Sponsors Assist In KILE Production
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) The Keystone Interna
tional Livestock Exposition
(KILE) is in its 44th year here at
the Farm Show Complex.
The exposition is recognized
nationally as a showcase for the
nation’s top beef cattle, swine,
sheep, and horses. KILE runs
from Oct. 4-9.
To date, 70 major sponsors
have committed funds to support
KILE. A sponsorship program
was put together a few years ago
to assist in funding the show as
well as to promote the show.
With the revamped KILE pro
gram, many opportunities exist

ning arena program at the 2000
Keystone International Livestock
Exposition (KILE), will be the
Challenge of the Breeds.
This show pits 10 internation
ally recognized horse breeds
Appaloosa, Arabian, the Paint,
Half-Arabian, Morgan, Palomi
no, Pinto, Quarter Horse, Perche
ron, and Saddlebred against
each other in an evening of fun
and mastery.
These animals have been cho
sen by their respective breed as
sociations. In order to compete,
the horse must be owned by a
Pennsylvania resident or by a
bonafide member of the Pennsyl
vania Breed Association invited
to participate. The event is spon
sored in part by the University of
Pennsylvania, School of Veteri
nary Medicine, New Bolton Cen
ter.

New Bolton Center is sponsoring
the Challenge of the Breeds
Show Friday evening in the
Large Arena. This event will pit
10 internationally recognized
horse breeds Appaloosa, Ara
bian, Half-Arabian, Percheron,
Saddlebred, Paint, Quarter
Horse, Morgan, Palomino, and
Pinto against each other in an
evening of fun and mastery.
Twelve horses chosen by their re
spective breed associations will
be entered in the competition.

* Pleasure driving. Horses are
asked to perform both ways at a
walk and trot.
• English pleasure. In English
tack, horses will perform both di
rections at a walk, trot, and a
canter.
• Hunter hack. In addition to
performing on the rail, the horse
will be asked to take two jumps.
• Western pleasure. In west
ern gear, the horse will walk, jog,
and lope in both directions.
• Western riding. The horse
performs a prescribed course
which demonstrates the perform
ance of a well-mannered ranch
horse.
• Barrel racing. A timed event
in the clover-leaf pattern is per
formed by the horse.
• Timed obstacle trail class.
Horses negotiate a series of obst
acles encountered on the trail.
The horses will be judged at

pion will then receive $l,OOO.
Sponsoring the Kiddie Pedal
Pull is Evergreen Tractor Sales,
Myerstown. Dennis Grumbine,
owner, reports that he chose the
Kiddie’s Pedal Pull to sponsor
because of the close tie-in with
the equipment business. The
Pedal Pull will be Saturday, Oct.
7, at 3 p.m. The event is open to
children between the ages of 3-8.
Kessler Meats has chosen to
sponsor the daily “Kessler’s
Barnyard,’’ as it is called, where
kids of all ages can touch and pet
barnyard animals. Kessler’s
Meats is located in Lemoyne.

stone Sovereign champion
and will receive an award of
$l,OOO. The reserve champi
on will be awarded $5OO.
Placings will be paid
through eighth place.
This marks the 11th time
that a Challenge of the
Breeds event has been con
ducted in Pennsylvania.
Several of the six-horse
hitch teams will also per
form in competitive classes
during the evening.
The show will begin at
6:30 p.m. on Friday eve
ning, Oct. 6, at the Pennsyl
vania Farm Show Arena,
Harrisburg, and the admis
sion fee for the show is $5.
Lebanon Valley Farmers/
Fulton Bank is sponsoring the
Agri-Kid Olympics. Farm-relat
ed competitive events will be
conducted for children, including
wheelbarrow races, hay toss, and
sack races. Kids will even learn
how to auctioneer.
Pennsylvania Livestock Asso
ciation is sponsoring the Key
stone Stockman’s Contest. It will
be Monday, Oct. 9 and is open to
any 4-H or FFA member in the
U.S. and Canada. Last year, 502
youth participated in this con
test.
