Merry Michaelmas
Called either a pnnce or a general, Michael was the
handsome young man commanded to drive the rebel
angels out of heaven. He’s often depicted as a stem
faced, winged angel in armor, sometimes carrying the
scales of justice as well as his
lance and shield. Longfellow's
“Golden Legend” claims that
Michael is governed by Mercury
and brings prudence to man.
Some traditional foods for
Michaelmas Day, September 29,
include new wine, roasted goose,
and cakes of oats, barley, and rye. _
ancient Great Britain, the goose was considered a sacri
fice to the saint The feast day honors not just Michael
but all angels.
The devil sets his foot on the blackberries
on Michaelmas Day.
