York Fair Junior Sheep Supremes
JOYCEBUPP
York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York Co.) A
growthy and stylish homebred
Southdown captured supreme
champion honors at the York
Fair’s junior sheep breeding
show, exhibited by veteran 4-H
shepherd Jen Flinchbaugh.
The win added to a successful
show season for “Lucille,” the
Southdown champion named by
Flinchbaugh for the classic
country hit song. Earlier in her
travels across the tanbark trail,
“Lucille” was selected best in
her age class at the national
junior Southdown show held in
Springfield, Massachusetts.
Taking the Supreme ram
honors was a tall, stretchy Suf
folk bred and raised by 15-year
old shepherd Travis Flory, Red
Lion. The February ram’s top
win added to a successful show
at the York Fair for Flory, who
is already looking forward to
traveling to the upcoming Key
stone show with his winning
homebred.
Other top winners in the
breed divisions of the junior
sheep show included Tony
Haugh, Red Lion, champion
and reserve Cheviot, Matt Bank
ert, Hanover, with the champion
and reserve Dorsets. Hampshire
honors went to Megan Heath,
Fawn Grove, while Krissy Stem,
also of Fawn Grove, had the
champion Shropshire.
Jen Flinchbaugh snagged all
the top Southdown honors. Suf
folk banners were split between
Travis Flory, with the champion
ram and reserve champion ewe,
and Mike Burrell, Dover, who
exhibited the champion ewe.
Juniors also shared honors in
the numerous “shepherding”
competitions. Champion show
man was Kelly Jo Bankert, Red
Lion, with Lindsay Jones, East
Berlin, in the reserve champion
spot. Lindsay Jones was cham
pion of the blocking and groom
ing, with Susan Richardson,
Fawn Grove, taking reserve
honors.
Jen Flinchbaugh topped the
shepherd’s bred and owned cat
egory, with Lindsay Jones the
runner-up. Champion fitter was
Travis Flory, over reserve cham
pion Lindsay Jones.

Six-Year-Old Shepherd Snags
York Fair Sheep Show
JOYCE BUPP
York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York Co.) Six
year-old Cortney Flory enjoyed
the ribbons, the banners and the
honors she carried back to her
family’s sheep pens at the York
Fair, after winning the open
class market lamb show Sunday
afternoon.
But she was not quite so sure
about the tradition that follows
the annual winner of this partic
ular competition.
“I have to pay for the ice
cream,” she announced with
wide-eyed realization. Setting
up ice cream for the host of
fellow sheep competitors has
become a post-show tradition at
the fair among the families who
return to the show arena year
after year.
Cortney, the daughter of Tim
and Beth Flory, Spring Grove, is
just the latest sheep exhibitor in
at least the third generation of
extended Flory clan to partici
pate in the York Fair. Her win
ning heavyweight champion
ewe, “Sunflower,” is a purebred
from the flock of J & J Acres.
The youngster is a first-grader
at Spring Grove’s Paradise Ele
mentary School and has been
helping with the family’s sheep
showing for at least three years.
Pulled into the ring as the re
serve champion open class
market lamb was Melissa Tros
tle, Red Lion, a member of the
Ronald Trostle family and an
other long-time York Fair shep
herding competitor. Her
crossbred entry earlier won the
light heavyweight division.

JOYCEBUPP
York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York Co.) Tammi
Grubb claimed double honors in
the York Fair’s junior division
steer shows, winning the cham
pionships in both the market
steer and the prospect steer cate
gories.
In her final year as a 4-H ex

beef breeder and showman
topped the competitive junior
market steer show with a hand
some Angus x Maine-Anjou
crossbred. Despite his being
somewhat ill-at-ease and restless
in the showing. “Harley” was
ultimately steered to the top of
the competition by the veteran
junior exhibitor.
Grubb duplicated the top-spot
win with a younger steer,
“Logan,” to take champion
honors in the prospect class, a
special category for steers being
groomed for Farm Show compe
tition in January. Though ineli
gible for junior classes after this
show season, the Hanover young
woman, who is employed at
Bauman’s Purina Feeds dealer
ship, plans to continue showing
and custom beef fitting.
In the reserve champion
market steer spot was Hope
Long, IS, Airville, exhibiting her
crossbred steer “Colby.” Colby
was the steer winner earlier at
the Mason-Dixon fair and
topped his class at the spring
steer show.
