What Is A Chute Worth?
COLUMBUS, Ohio Many
small beef producers do not
have adequate cattle handling
facilities. These same producers
often think that “the benefits
(proper cattle management)
don’t justify the costs (purchas
ing the equipment).” The fol
lowing chart is based upon
figures investigated at the Uni
versity of Georgia. These figures
represent the lost return caused
by not investing in adequate
cattle-handling facilities which
often lets important health and
management practices go
undone in a typical 25-head
cowherd.
Failure to;
• Castrate: ($5.00/cwt dis
counted at sale) $225.00
• Dehorn: ($4.50/cwt dis
counted at sale) $127.50
• Implant: (loss of 201bs /calf
per year) $140.00
• Cull open cows: ($175/open
cow per year carry-over) $875.00
This results in a potential
total loss per year of $1467.50
based upon UGA research. In
addition, this fails to address the
potential losses of not partici
pating in preconditioning pro
grams such as Buckeye’s Best or
the failure to properly identify
ing poor-doers by tracking indi
vidual animal performance
through the use of scales and
electronic identification.

While these numbers were
generated in the southeastern
US, thus they may not accu
rately reflect Ohio’s markets, the
basic principles still apply. As
the US beef marketing system
continues to change, additional
emphasis (and therefore in
creased dollar value) is going to
be placed on high-quality cattle
that have been properly cared
for using the highest standards
of beef quality assurance.
