HARVEST PRICING
STRATEGIES FOR
CORN & BEANS
John Berry
Lehigh County
Marketing Agent
While anything is possible, it
appears that corn and soybean
prices will remain well below the
loan rate through harvest. Har
vesttime pricing strategies will
be centered on the use of the
marketing loan program.
Strategy selection will be in
fluenced by the availability and
cost of storage, local basis, will
ingness to use various pricing
tools, and payment limitation
considerations. The primary ob
jective will be to net a price in
excess of the Commodity Credit
Corporation loan rate without
undue risk of a net price below
the loan rate.
Availability of permanent
storage may be a problem. Many
bins are full of wheat. The ex
pected large crop will keep basis
levels very weak and corn fu
tures spreads relatively large. If
so, premiums for later delivery
will be present compared to har
vest cash bids.
Congress has in place a
$75,000 limit on loan deficiency
payments (LDP) and marketing

loan gains for crops produced
during 2000.
Strategies to consider:
• If the basis remains weak
and the premium for later deliv
ery is large, producers might es
tablish LDP on a portion of the
crop and forward price for
future delivery. This strategy re
quires the FSA posted county
price (PCP) track local cash bids
fairly closely and the premium
for later delivery exceed the cost
of storage.
• Producers can store a por
tion of the crop under loan and
lock in the repayment rate for a
period of 60 days after the funds
have been dispersed.
Again, this strategy works
well if the PCP tracks local cash
bids and cash prices remain low
during harvest. The loan repay
ment lock-in allows producers to
benefit from a post harvest price
rally by selling the crop at a
higher price and repaying the
loan at a lower rate.
The most likely time for a
price increase is December. The
application for loan should be
made early. If prices remain low
into late October, the repayment
rate could be established at that
time. If prices do not rally, the
loan can be repaid at the daily
rate any time before maturity.
