Incoming Feeder Cattle
Management
COLUMBUS, Ohio For
apy cattlemen, this can be an ex
tremely difficult time for receiv
ing feeder cattle. Frequently,
during fall, reports circulate
about outbreaks of BRSV, BVD
and other related respiratory
problems that may be categor
ized as “shipping fever” in pur
chased feeder cattle. It seems in
many cases, the problems go
back to cattle that were not vac
cinated as part of a weaning,
marketing or receiving program.
Vaccination
Ohio State University Exten
sion veterinarian Bill Shulaw
has said that while vaccines
don’t solve the problem, they do
raise the level of disease resist
ance when administered to
healthy cattle. While it’s best to
vaccinate before shipment, this
is not always possible in the case
of purchased feeder cattle.
Incoming cattle should be
evaluated upon arrival and if
they are in good condition, vac
cination will be of benefit if ad
ministered with a minimal
amount of stress on the calf.
Vaccinations for BRSV, BVD,
PIS and IBR are the primary
concern for calves destined for
the feedlot.
Feed Intake
Of equal importance in regard
to preventing health problems in
feeder cattle is proper nutrition.
However, a key point to keep in
mind is that the best diet one can
formulate will result in nutri
tional deficiencies if calves
won’t consume it! Newly arrived
calves do not readily eat upon
arrival in the feedlot.
In fact, OSU Extension Beef
Specialist Steve Boyles says on
day one in the feedlot, only 22%
of the calves may eat. By day 3,
approximately 40% may still not
be eating and on day 10, an av
erage of 15% of the calves may
not be eating.
Factors which stimulate feed
intake will increase nutrient
intake and allow a quicker re-

bulls Number 1 95-135 lbs 90.00-122.50,
mainly 90.00; 80-90 lbs 55.00-75.00.
Number 2 85-120 lbs 60.00-100.00. Hol-
covery from stress and a more
immunologically competent
animal. When cattle first arrive
at an unfamiliar facility, they
will spend considerable time
walking the fence line searching
for a way out.
Boyles says, if possible, feed
bunks and water troughs should
be located along the fence line so
that as cattle circle the pen, they
are forced to walk around them.
This however may not be a feasi
ble practice for some feedyards.
Nutrition
The actual starter ration
should contain from 70% to 85%
concentrate so as to compensate
the low intake of incoming
calves. If silage is to be a part of
the receiving program, consider
providing it at least 2 times a
day to prevent deterioration in
the bunk.
Nutrient content of the starter
ration may also be higher to
compensate for the reduced feed
intake. Starter diets should con
tain approximately .3 ppm
Selenium, 1.0% Potassium on a
dry matter basis.
Protein content needs to be
higher as well (16-18%).
Grass and Hay
Good quality, long stem grass
or legume-grass hay that is free
from mold and weeds should be
placed in the feed bunk or on the
apron their first few days in the
pen in order to entice the calves
to the bunk. Also, beginning
with the first day in the lot, the
receiving ration should be sprin
kled on top of the grass or grass
legume hay. Boyles says to use a
starter ration amounting to be
tween .5 and .75% of the calfs
body weight to begin.
