Farming, Saturday, September 2, 2000 Allentown Boar Champion One Of Longest Exhibitor, Judge Have Seen ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff ALLENTOWN (Lehigh Co.) Who says those in the show ring sometimes don’t agree with the judge? John Strawbridge certainly does. While John was readying the homebred champion January boar, a Yorkshire, he noted the Todd Lee Bennecoff Jr. won supreme champion gilt with his Duroc Wednesday at the Allentown Fair. boar might have been the “longest” in terms of body length he’s seen. If “they get any longer than that, you start running into problems,” said Roger Bankert, Hanover, judge of the Allentown Fair swine show. Banker!, at the two day show Wednesday and Thursday this week, picked the boar from Busy Acre Farm, Whitehall. John, 16, son of Donna Strawbridge, White Hall, also picked up grand champion showman in the ring Thursday morning. A show veteran at Allentown who has won champion before, John, a junior at Whi tehall High School, wasn’t even sure about bringing the hog. But with help from grandfather Calvin Lazarus, John said he “knew what was there” when the boar started to mature. John has shown at Schnecksville, Kemp ton, Kutztown, and is showing at Sullivan and in Syracuse, N.Y. He also plans to show at Bloomsburg Fair, Keystone Interna tional Livestock Expo (KILE), and Farm Show. A Duroc February gilt won supreme champion gilt at the Allentown Fair Wednesday. The champion was shown by Todd Lee Bennecoff Jr., 12, son of Todd and Cheryl Bennecoff, Kutztown. Todd Sr. said the how was purchased at a national summer type conference in Co lumbus, Ohio, in July. Todd Jr., in the seventh grade at Northwestern, said he and his dad picked the hog at the show. Todd Jr. said the pig was “long, and she had pretty much muscle” when they purchased her, at about 200 pounds. His dad said they purchased other animals to improve their herd at the show.
