received his patent for the incredible device on
August 31, 1887 He and his assistant, W K L.
Dickson, had hoped the device would do “for the eyes
what the phonograph does for the ears ” The invention
was immediately popular
for its ability to put pictures
into motion —depicting a
sneeze, for example The
kinetoscope was soon re
placed by a scieen projec
tor, enabling more than one

viewer at a time to see the
pictures Edison and Dickson continued their explo
rations of the moving pictures, however, and opened a
studio for their short “flickers" in 189^
