BEDFORD (Bedford Co.)
C-Cove Storm Sierra Gem, a Holstein owned by Dana
Cessna of Cessna Brothers farm in Clearville, took home
the supreme champion award from the Bedford County
Fair, it was a first for the Cessnas and a total surprise.
“She is a good, well-balanced animal,” said Wayne Cess
na, Dana’s husband. “But we didn’t expect to take home
the top.”
Trials Yield 100 Bushels
COLUMBUS, Ohio
in the depths of a
head scab epidemic
four years ago, getting
a record wheat yield
was far from Ohio
farmers’ minds.
Yet Ohio State Uni
versity’s 2000 wheat
performance test not
only set a record yield,
it also showed the pos
si b ili t y for
100-bushel-per-acre
yields.
“One thing we can
draw from such an
outstanding season
such as this is that
there are varieties
available to farmers
today that have the
potential of reaching
100 bushels per acre,”
said test supervisor
Dave Jordan at OSU’s
Ohio Agricultural Re
search and Develop
ment Center, Wooster.
A
104-bushel-per-acre
yield the test’s high
est was recorded at
Bucyrus. The average
yield of all varieties at
all sites was 82.6 bush
els per acre, an in
crease of 3 bushels per
acre from last year’s
record.
The other sites were
Hoytville, Wooster,
Greenville and Circle
ville.
Farmers can check
out the results in time
for selecting varieties
for fall seeding at

test results are also
available at local Ex
tension offices.

of Cessna Brothers farm in
Clearville, took home the su
preme champion award from the
Bedford County Fair.
It was a first for the Cessnas
and a total surprise. “She is a
good, well-balanced animal,”
said Wayne Cessna, Dima’s hus
band. “But we didn’t expect to
take home the top.”
The Cessnas do not expect to
take her to other competitions
this year. She will be fresh in De
cember and off her milk cycle.
Taking reserve champion was
a 4-year-old Guernsey owned by
Aaron Gable of the Snider
Homestead Farm in New Enter
prise.
The black and white Holstein
marked the first of her breed to
take the supreme award since
1991, and that was the first year
of a Bedford Fair supreme cham
pion. A Red and White did take
home the trophy a few years ago.
The winner was selected from
a list of dairy champions selected
over the previous two days.
Following is a list of show
placings.
