Introduction
Nutrient management is a key issue that will continue to
affect farms in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Regu
lations are becoming stricter to prevent nutrient runoff and
streamwater contamination.
To help farmers comply with regulations and to help
them their role in understand nutrient management, Lan
caster Farming has compiled this second addition of “The
Nutrient Management Reference Guide.”
The guide includes valuable information and advice on
developing and maintaining a nutrient management plan
on your farm. It also lists resources to help you get started in
nutrient management planning. Issues affecting farmers
and ways to deal with excess nutrients are also addressed.
The staff of Lancaster Farming thanks the many contrib
utors to this book, including experts from the Penn State
University, Cornell University, the Pennsylvania Depart
ment of Agriculture, the State Soil Commission, local con
servation districts, extension offices, and in private
practices.
“The Nutrient Management Reference Guide” was pub
lished as a supplement to the August 19, 2000, issue of the
Lancaster Farming. It will be made available at area trade
shows where the Lancaster Farming exhibits.
