At every fair 4-H’ers play a substantial part in live stock showing. Raising the ani mals and preparing them for showing requires lots of work and patience. At the Schuylkill County Fair, Aug. 7-12, 4-H’ers also provided activities in honor of Dairy Day. Visitors vied for prizes in the but ter making contest, ice cream eating contest, milk chugging contest, and other activities. The events caused lots of Eva Roeder, Lebanon, shows off one of the many blue ribbons she won at the fair. In livestock competition, Paul and Briana Shealer showed many of the champion animals. The brother and sister team from Auburn said they share many of the chores, but when it comes to show ring they compete against each other. Paul showed the Big Guy, a purebred Black Angus, which took champion market steer hon ors. Paul also showed the re serve market hog and the grand champion market goat. Turning cream into butter is no easy feat according to Schuylkill County Fair Queen Katee Frank, Princess Codi McGuinness, and Little Miss Tiffany Piker, 9. The ice cream eating contest would be easier without hair. Briana showed Rita, the champion market hog, the cham pion and reserve market lambs, Thelma and Louise. Aaron Ruch, 17, Andreas, showed a 3-year-old Holstein for the Supreme champion cow over all breeds. The homebred cow was raised on his parents’ Brian and Bren- da Ruch’s farm where they milk 45-50 cows. Peach ice cream sundaes is the most popular choice by fairgoers.
