Connie Teel, safety chairman of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, said that 40 per
cent of reported farm accidents are women. She, herself, has had two farm injuries and
knows how quickly accidents can happen. At the booth, visitors who picked out 17 haz
ards received prizes such as sunglasses, coloring books, earplugs, and an entry for a
smoke detector.

She recently slipped on wet tile
in the barn and broke her wrist.
With four children and now
grandchildren growing up on a
farm, Connie wants to do all she
can to promote farm safety.
Visitors competed in the larg
est weed contest, professional
growers and farmers seeking a
profitable crop alternative vis
ited the cut-flower demonstra
tion plot, where horticulture
experts gave advice on garden
ing and flower growing.
While the latest scientific
findings are intriguing to schol
ars and the equipment, tour, and
crop information are a bonus for
farmers, the family-oriented ac
tivities are a big drawing card.
“Our family looks forward to
this every year, and it’s free!’’ a
Somerset County visitor said.
“There aren’t too many free
events anywhere else for family
fun.”
