Dairy Cow
(Contlniwd from Pago A 22)
overfed and at other periods
these cows will be under fed.
If the dry cow group is fed for
the far-off cows to maintain
their body condition, then the
transition cows, those two-four
weeks from calving will lose
condition. A loss in body condi
tion in these cows means a loss
of weight, which is body fat, and
protein.
Both body fat and protein loss
in a transition cow pre-calving
will predispose these animals to
a variety of metabolic diseases
including ketosis, milk fever,
fatty liver, and downer cow syn
drome.
On the other hand, if the dry
cow group is fed to support the
nutrient needs of the transition
cows; than the far-off dry cows
will get fat. This will put excess

condition on these cows, tend to
reduce their rumen-fill and the
combination will again produce
a variety of metabolic diseases
including displace abomasums
and ketosis.
Fetal development during the
last two months of the dry
period presents a great nutrient
demand on the dry cow. Over 60
percent of the fetal growth
occurs during the last two
months of the dry period along
with development of the placen
tal fluids and the placenta.
The protein requirements of
the dry cow increases by nearly
four times from the beginning of
the dry period to the end. This
amount is roughly 100 grams
per day at the beginning of the
dry period to 350 grams per day
at the end. The energy require
ments in terms of calories in
creases by nearly three times
during this same period.
The bottom line is that you
need two dry cow rations, one
for the dry cows and one for the
dry cows that are part of the
transition cow group.
