Photo by Andy Andrews Dairy producers report increased milk production when using Marshall Ryegrass over other winter forages. In addition, dairy & cattle producers report Marshall Ryegrass produces rich, green winter grazing much longer than other varieties - starts earlier in the fall and continues to give hearty grazing deep into spring. In Cold Weather tests from agricultural universities that included all leading annual ryegrass varieties, Marshall ranked #1 for winter hardiness in 22 out of 24 tests. Seeding: A pasture seeder or grain drill does the best job and lets you cut the broadcast seeding rate by a third to a half. Generally, your planting should be shallow, not more than a 1/4” to 1/2”. It is important to firm the seedbed with a cultipacker or seed with a pasture seeder with a cultipacker attachment. Plant 25-30 lb. per acre. Fertility: Fertilize and lime according to soil test recommendations. According to Keith Bryan, Penn State instructor in animal science and coach of the live stock judging team, the Skil lathon included five different areas: quality assessment and health, feeds and nutrition, meats identification, equipment identification and use, and over all management. Bryan judged the type portion of the contest. Judge for the showmanship portion o the event was Mike Burrell, York, former 4-H member and one-time individ- ip* QJj ANNUAL RYEGRASS The leader In Yield and Cold-Weather Tolerante!
