LAST YEAR
CATTLE: Compared to last week’s
closing prices, slaughter steers and heif
ers closed 1.50-2.00 higher. The bulk of
this week’s advance came on Monday’s
opening market. Prices were strong, but
still only regained about a third of the
losses experienced over the last month.

The spark in prices caused local farmers
to market a good many well finished
cattle that they had been bolding back.
Midwestern fat cattle sold 1.00-2.00
higher from 65.00-66.50 live and mostly
104.00 dressed. The only justification for
this week’s market rebound was the ma
turation of the August live cattle futures
contract. Numerous loads of hedged fat
cattle were delivered this week to reap
the 66.00 futures price and cash trading
was forced to follow suit. Local Holstein
steer demand was rather light this week
and prices closed steady to weak.
Slaughter cows finished steady to 1.00
higher on midweek gains. Slaughter
bulls ended 1.00- 1.50 higher on a light
supply. Supply included 38 percent
slaughter steers, 5 percent slaughter
heifers, 44 percent slaughter cows, 4 per
cent slaughter bulls, with the balance
feeders.
