Cat Nights Begin
According to Mark Twain, “Ignorant people think it's
the noise which fighting cats make that is so aggra
vating, but it ain’t so, it’s the sickening grammar
they use ” August, the traditional time when those alley
cats on the fence get yowly, marks the commencement
of Cat Nights, on the 17th Like the sultry, hot, and
humid Dog Days (beginning July 3 and lasting 40
days). Cat Nights also mark a period of hot weather,
although drier. One Irish legend has it that witches
could turn themselves into cats eight times and still
regain their identities The ninth time, around August
17, they couldn’t change back, hence the noise
