    Summer Interns Help With Extension Programs

When schools close, students
congregate in the many pro
grams offered through county of
fices of Penn State Extension.
Helping out with the summer
rush at Lancaster County exten
sion programing are three sum
mer interns whose experience
and career plans bring energy,
enthusiasm, and new ideas. The
three interns selected have differ
ent responsibilities within exten
sion programing.
Charity Irvine, 20, is working
with urban youth. A former
4-H’er herself, Charity adapts
4-H programing to the needs of
inner city youth, who especially
enjoy cultural cooking.
Shirley Adams, inspirational television sewing instruc'
tor, will teach classes at Berks Ag Center, Sept. 12.

Charity is in her final year at
Cornell University where she is
pursuing a degree in psychology
and Asian religious studies. She
spent one semester in London at
the School of Oriental and Afri
can studies. After grad school,
Charity plans to devote her life
to missions and finds the experi
ence of working with urban
youth invaluable.
Lori Hohanwarter, 20, is a jun
ior at Millersville where she is
majoring in English and second
ary education.
Because Lori is in charge of
general 4-H activities and day
camp, her educational back
ground is beneficial in helping
4-H’erS with speech competi
tions. She enjoys compiling facts
and trivia to use in activities such

Tia Crider, 22, grew up on a
dairy farm in Chambersburg,
Franklin County. She is in her
fifth year at Penn State study
ing dairy and animal science
and hopes to become an exten
sion agent.
As a member of the college
dairy judging team, Tia brings
a strong background in organ
izing the county’s dairy
judging team, which won first
place in regional competition
and second place at the state
level.
Tia previously served as a
summer intern in Franklin
County. While working as a
summer intern, Tia lives with
a local poultry farm family.

co-sponsor two Shirley Adams
Sewing Seminars on Tuesday,
September 12, at 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
and 6 p.m.-9 p.m. located at the
Berks County Agricultural Cen
ter.
The cost for one session is $25
or for both sessions $45. Regis
tration must be received before
August 31. Registration fees in
creases after that date.

her primary concern. With three
degrees in clothing and textiles,
she taught these subjects at the
university level for many years.
Now her “classroom” has ex
panded to include television sta
tions all over the country, Cana
da and even Australia. She not
only provides the quality inform
ation to perform such operations
as setting-in sleeves and satisfy
ing fitting problems, but she in
spires her students to mix and
match colors and materials
even create their own fabrics.
The two seminars will focus
on different topics and a huge

collection of 150 garments will
be displayed each time for every
one to see. Various fabric embel
lishments will also be high
lighted. The daytime session (1-4
p.m.) will feature quick altera
tions, ways to easily solve pat
tern problems, ways to change
the location of darts, changing
styling but using the same pat
tern. The evening session (6-9
p.m.) will feature quick ward
robe additions and add-ons for
suits and other garments that are
suitable for business, church and
many other occasions.
