The Reading fair has reopened
its doors after a few years of
hiatus, a fact which seemed to
have little effect on the type of

“We had a very excellent
show with a lot of quality top to
bottom,” said judge Steve Shaw,
a Cargill nutritionist. “The win
ning cows would withstand a lot
of competition anywhere. The
animals could go onto bigger
shows and still do very well. We
also had a very strong junior
show.”
Shaw, who grew up in the
nearby Oley area, judges ap
proximately a dozen shows a
year in Pennsylvania. He and his
wife own a dairy herd in Willi
amsport. Clyde Myers directed
the Holstein and colored breeds
shows.
“We think it’s a great experi
ence here at the fair,” said A.
Wayne Readinger, who coordi
nates the agriculture and exhibit
areas. “We did anticipate that it
would be finished, but we
weren’t sure. We had some last
minute projects.”
This fair, believes Readinger,
will help fair coordinators im
prove next year’s fair.
Although the fair is down in
dairy numbers, Readinger is
confident that the new facilities
will draw more exhibitors in the
coming years. The attendance of
competitors in the beef ring has
remained about the same.
Lower dairy numbers may be
