Miller, Neiman Share Reading Sheep Champion Spotlight Honors
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
LEESPORT (Berks Co.)
An ewe that exhibited a “lot of
maternal instincts,” according
to the judge, stood out in compe
tition at the youth sheep breeds
show Monday afternoon at the
Reading Fair.
Amanda Miller, IS, daughter
of Ron and Joan Miller, Bem
ville, exhibited a Southdown
yearling ewe to grand champion.
The champion was selected by
Marlyn Stroh, fair judge and
shepherd of Erdenheim Farm,
Lafayette Hill.
Jill Neiman exhibited the
grand champion ram, an Oxford
spring ram named “Draco” at
the fair.
Amanda, in the ninth grade at
Tulpehocken High School and
member of the Berks County 4-
H Sheep and Lamb Club, has ex
hibited at a variety of fairs this
year, including shows in Phila
delphia, Kempton, Schnecks
ville, and Kimberton.
Amanda, Reading Fair grand
champion showman and fitter,
also plans to exhibit at Kutz
town, Allentown, Denver, and
Oley fairs, in addition to Key
stone International Livestock
Expo and Farm Show.
Amanda also plans to show in
Pike County, Pennsylvania and
Duchess County, New York.
Champion ram exhibitor Jill
Neiman, 16, is the daughter of
Leon and Linda Neiman, Fleet
wood. The Oley Valley High
School 11th grader and Berks
County sheep and wool queen
names all her lambs for the con
stellations of stars in the sky.
Jill also exhibited the grand
champion market lamb, an
Oxford wether named “Castor.”
The 118-pound lamb is home
bred.
Jill’s father, Leon, fed the
lamb while Jill attended Penn

the summer.
Jill attributes the heavyweight
champion lamb to “excellent
genetics,” she noted, and being
on the pasture with the bigger
ewes that “chase him around.”
Jill said she has shown at
Kempton and plans to show at
Kutztown, Allentown, Oley,
Farm Show, and county
roundup.
Reserve champion market
lamb was shown by Clay Bru
baker, 9, son of Ken and Ginger
Brubaker, Womelsdorf.
Clay, in the fourth grade at
Conrad Weiser West, named the
lamb “Steel” because of its
black color (a Hampshire/Suf
folk crossbred spring lamb,
noted Clay).
According to Ken, the 94-
pound reserve heavyweight
champion lamb, from Clay’s
grandparents Clyde and Doro
thy Brubaker, provided Clay,
also market pair champion, with
a first champion at the year his
very first year of showing.
New fairgrounds near
Leesport marked the site of the
renewed Reading Fair, which
used to be conducted at the
Kutztown Fairgrounds because
work at the new Leesport loca
tion wasn’t complete.
In the breeds, Cheviot ram
champion went to Cathy Levan
and ewe to Amber Shollen
berger. Corriedale champion
ewe went to Emily Hannon.
Dorset champion ewe went to
Ryan Lynch. Oxford champion
ewe and ram were awarded to
Jill Neiman.
Shropshire champion ewe and
ram were presented to Amanda
Miller, who also won champion
Southdown ram and ewe.
Suffolk champion ewe went to
Carrie Hartman. Romney
champion ram and ewe were
awarded to Mark Brennen.
In the show, there were 39
breed sheep and 29 market
lambs with 21 exhibitors. Fol-
