The market opened sharply lower and only got worse as buyers worked through the large offering. Packer demand was light and the best prices paid for fed cattle was for those going back on feed. Holstein steers traded .50-1.00 lower, while slaughter heifers were only lightly tested with a much lower undertone. Slaughter cow prices were steady to 1.00 lower, but slaughter bulls sold steady to 1.00 higher. Supply included 50 percent slaughter steers and 36 percent slaughter cows. CATTLE CALVES THIS WEEK 1913 1805 LAST WEEK 1879 1704 LAST YEAR 2653 1802 CATTLE; Compared to last week’s closing prices, slaughter steers and heif ers closed 2.00-3.00 lower, with stiff losses late in the week. The fat cattle market has slipped steadily lower all summer, but the rug came out from under prices on Thursday. Lower fu-. tures, dressed beef, and Western mar kets along with a large steer run and lackadaisical buyers took it’s toll. Buyers took their seats Thursday with a sharply lower market in mind, and conditions were evident on the first bunch sold. Midwestern feeders are also suffering and this week settled for 64.00 live and mostly 102.00 dressed, which was 1.00- (Turn to Pago A 39) .
