August I marks the ancient Scottish tradition ot handtast
marriages, a custom something like a trial marriage It
was customary in Denmark, as well Sir Walter Scott
wrote ol it. “Knowest thou not that rite, holy man 1 ' then

may choose another mate, or, at their
pleasure, |they 1 may call the pnest to
marry them for life and this we call
handtasting " Some called it hand
fastening By some definitions, it took
on more the demeaner ot a marriage ot
convenience, such as when a man lost
his wife to illness and then handfasted
with a nurse or servant who had been
in the household
A had oyster, like a had marriage,
is not known until it is too late.
